Painted Cowgirl Hat

Painted cowgirl hats are all the rage these days. Have you seen some? 

Addie needed a custom hat.

Mom delivered.

(This is actually a Tutorial! Did you notice? Not a What-Not-To-Do-Torial!)

We started with a pink straw hat. If you can’t find a pink one, or you want a different color, use spray paint. It is my opinion spray paint can fix darn near anything if applied correctly!

I painted the under side of the brim a nice minty green/teal. I used run of the mill acrylic paints I purchased at Walmart. Step one complete. Let it dry.

I googled inspiration for the image. This is done by a very talented lady, Denise A. Wells. Check out her site.

I sketched it in with pencil, then went over with painters markers. 

I bought a set like this at Walmart.

After I had most of the outline completed we needed to decide on the color of the horse. Since I had used most other colors (pink, red, white) I decided go for blue.

Gasp! I was sure I ruined it at this point. I set it down and walked away. 

"Grrr! Never trying anything artsy fartsy again!"

Then inspiration struck! I went over the blue with white to mellow it out. Added a few pops of pink to the feathers and retraced the black. 

Mama’s happy again! 

A little (or a lot) of silver sparkle spray paint.

And I have a very happy cowgirl too!

Now all I need to do is figure out how to attach her peacock feathers and she will have a perfect barrel racers hat! 

** Now my two biggest mistakes (other than the freaky blue horse) were caused by being in too big of a hurry. 

1. I have a big blue smear on the crown of the hat because I didn’t take my time and have my work space all prepared. (But I think the peacock feather will cover that up.)

2. When I went to open the glitter spray paint, it required a screwdriver to push the cap open. Being in a hurry, I hit the cap against the porch, resulting in a glitter eruption the likes of which I have never seen before or since! Next time, I will take a moment to find the screwdriver!

So if you take your time and be patient with the process and yourself this is a really fun project! Google "painted cowgirl hats" to see all sorts of fun ideas!

My sister wanted a picture of the sparkle spray mishap. Since taking the phone out for a quick self during a glitter eruption was out of the question (or I just didn't think of it) I did a recreate!

Fire Safety at the Preschool

It is fire safety month at the preschool at my real job. And really, what good would it be to have Dalmatian Puppies during fire safety month if I didn’t bring them in?

Kids and puppies just go hand-in-hand! The preschoolers call the Dalmatians Dot-da-dogs. I think it is super cute!

Bullseye is giving kisses here.

Mac is giving kisses there.

A hug for Sparkle.

And a cuddle for Bronco.

Everyone had a blast! And we even taught them to: Stop, Drop...

And roll!

2015 Colts Part I

This post is for my record keeping purposes as much as anything. That being said, please enjoy being introduced to our 2015 crop of colts. (The first batch at least.)

These colts change so much in a few months, not to mention a few years, that seems about the time these colts are about 4 years old and we are bucking them, Dick and I are both scratching our heads trying to remember, “Now which mare is that one out of?” So voila! In the year 2019 (holy cow that sounds CRAZY!) we will know who these colts are out of.

This is a sorrel colt out of the Old 13 Mare and Billy the Kid.

This is a Bay Filly out of Icy Sparks and Billy the Kid.

This is Loppy, a colt out of Betsy Crockett and Billy the Kid.

This is Thistle, and ornery little gal out of Wild Rose (AKA the sorrel mare that hurt her leg) and Billy the Kid.

This is Lookin’ Back, a bay horse colt out of the Kicking mare and Billy the Kid.

This is Booty, a filly out of Fruity and one of the Billys.

This is VooDoo Sue, a filly out of Bobby Sue and Billy the Kid.

There are a couple of Dalmatian puppies left and just one little cute Mini Aussie.  They are ready to go!

Bronco and Bullseye

I have two remaining Dalmatian Puppies. And though they are both totally lovable, they are about as different as brothers can be!

Bullseye (the one in the front) is outgoing and adventurous and boisterous.

While Bronco is calm, and quiet and cuddly and much more introverted. 

Bullseye goes out and does chores with me everyday. Follows me everywhere (except the mad cow’s pen! He’s not dumb!) He loves following along and pretending to be a big dog.

While Bronco will follow me for a little while, unless I keep encouraging him to come along, he will stop and head back to the yard. He knows where he is safe and where he belongs. He will wait there patiently and quietly till I return and be super happy to tell me how much he missed me then.

When I took the boys in for their vet check, Bronco sat quietly on my lap, taking everything in. Occasionally looking up to give me a small shy kiss. 

While Bullseye didn’t care where we were! He was going to attack my face with love! 

Bronco tends to point at things and look at them from a distance.

And when he gets too close to the cats, they only have to tell him once. 

While Bullseye jumps in head first! He will chase it, lick it, pounce on it or taste it! (Sometimes several times.)

“Mmmmm, the goat told me this stuff was good!"

“Blah! That goat is a stinky liar pants!"

 

“What? You knew I had to try it!"
